Follow new updates and improvements to Balance.

Not everyone shares money the same way, and until now the Overview assumed you did. Both of the things in this update are ones you asked us for.

Choose what your Overview leads with

Two compositions, one new button at the top right. Who spent what is the one you know: the split gauge, your two colours, who owes who. The month's spending is the new one โ€” your total against your monthly limit, and how much of it is left.

Couples who put everything into one shared account never needed the split, and told us so. Now they don't have to look at it: turn the shared account on and Balance switches for you. The button is there to overrule it whenever you like, either way.

What's left, per day or per week

This one you asked to have back after 4.0. What remains of your monthly limit can be read as a pace: how much a day, or how much a week, until the month is over. Daily, weekly, or off if you'd rather not know โ€” it lives in the same menu as the composition.

Also in 4.1

The charts could freeze on a month that held only a small expense or two; they don't any more. Subscriptions and the paywall lost a handful of crashes, saving an expense no longer reports an error it didn't have, and Balance starts noticeably faster.

Both features above started as posts on this board. Keep telling us what's missing โ€” we read everything.

This is the biggest update we have ever shipped. Every screen has been rebuilt, and four of the things you asked for most are now in the app.

Redesigned, top to bottom

Balance is built around a clearer overview now. At the centre of it is a new gauge: one look tells you whether your spending is in balance this month, and who owes who. No more doing the subtraction in your head.

React to an expense

Any expense can now be answered with an emoji. Most of what two people want to say about a purchase is a ๐ŸŽ‰ or a ๐Ÿ‘ or a ๐Ÿ˜… โ€” now you can say it where the expense is, instead of in a separate chat.

Know the moment it happens

Notifications arrive as soon as your partner adds a transaction, or reacts to one of yours. The shared account stops being something you remember to check.

Widgets, everywhere

The Split gauge and your category limits have widgets of their own, so the number that matters is on your Home Screen without opening anything. On iPhone there are Lock Screen widgets too, and a Control Center button that adds an expense in a single tap.

Built for the big screen

On tablets and on the desktop, Balance finally has a layout of its own: two columns for browsing your expenses, and a real window instead of a stretched phone.

Most of this update started as a post on this board โ€” the reactions, the widgets and the wider layout were all things you asked for. Keep telling us what's missing: we read everything.

  • Filter with Ease: Want to see exactly how much you've charged to the joint credit card this month? You can now filter your expense history by payment method, making it effortless to cross-check with your bank statements and keep your records perfectly accurate.

  • New Interactive Breakdown Chart: Weโ€™ve added a brand-new pie chart dedicated to your payment methods, just like the one you love for categories! At a glance, you can see colorful slices showing exactly what percentage of your total spending went through each account or card, giving your family a clear visual of your financial habits.
